The frequent listening to music at toohigh volumes with headphones is a considerablecause of hearing damages.Physicians and public health authoritieshave been demanding for limitation ofthe sound pressure level of portable musicplayback units for a long time.Now the standard EN 50332 is harmonizedwithin Europe and has been validin Germany as DIN EN 50332 sinceJuly 1, 2004. The standard comprisesthe measurement of the maximum soundpressure level of head- and earphonesassociated with portable audio equipment.The standard DIN EN 50332 has to beconsidered within the scope of safetyrequirements of audio, video and similarelectronic apparatus according to EN60065, article 3.1, and German “Equipmentand Product Safety Act” (GPSG ofMay 1, 2004).Part 1 of the standard refers to soundsystem equipment and headphones,which are sold as „one package- equipment“such as MP3-/CD-/HDplayers,MD-recorders or portable radios/cassette recorders with their headorearphones.Part 2 of the standard EN 50332 refers tohead-/earphones, which are offeredseparately for portable audio equipmentor are coming from a different manufacturer.The requirements can be transferredalso to other portable electronic deviceswith headphone connections, such aslaptops and portable televisions.The TUV Rheinland Group providesyou the opportunity of testing and certifyingthese products according to EN 50332.
